Blueberries to cut the risk of type 2 diabetes


Fruits rich in anthocyanins may lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, researchers from US say. The study published in the American journal of clinical nutrition showed that people eating two or more half-cup servings of blueberries per week had a 23 percent lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with people who ate no blueberries.

Data come from two huge population studies recruiting over 100,000 subjects who were free of diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer at baseline. Consumption of anthocyanin-rich foods, particularly blueberries, apples and pears turned out to be associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes. About 25.8 million Americans lives with diabetes. Of those cases, 90 to 95 percent are type 2. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled, or even avoided, first of all by choosing a healthy diet, physical activity and other lifestyle changes. But, according to this research, blueberries and other anthocyanin-rich foods can help a lot in this strategy.
